4 key takeaways from William Barr’s testimony on the Mueller report

Barr told a Senate subcommittee hearing that the report will be intelligible even after it has been redacted.

"For the same reason we're anxious about foreign influence in elections...spying on a political campaign is a big deal", Barr told Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). Trump himself has called on Barr to investigate the FBI's counterintelligence probe. "I am not suggesting that those rules were violated, but I think it's important to look at them". He confirmed that spying occurred against the campaign in 2016.

Attorney General William Barr, however, chose to not echo the president while he was delivering testimony before the Senate Appropriations Committee on Wednesday.

"I believe there is a basis for my concern, but I'm not going to discuss it", Barr said. "The ways in which the attorney general has sought to restrict, control, redact this report has created more confusion rather than more transparency". Barr said at a House hearing Tuesday that the report was coming "within a week". Since Barr released his 4-page summary exonerating Trump, some on Mueller's team have claimed he downplayed the seriousness of their findings.

The internal Justice Department review and redaction of the report continue to be a collaboration between the attorney general and the special counsel, and that process has gone smoothly.

And while Barr gave Trump the headlines he craved, he continues to keep the report secret. Barr told a House Appropriations panel on Tuesday that he expected the inspector general's work to be completed by May or June.

After President Donald Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey in 2017, former Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed special counsel Robert Mueller to head an independent investigation that would be separate "from the normal chain of command".

We also know that key FBI agents involved in the investigation were fiercely opposed to Trump.

United States intelligence officials have previously said they were spying on the Russians, not the Trump campaign.

Barr also alluded to information that suggested the Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted unauthorized surveillance against members of the campaign.

Associates of Trump's campaign, such as Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, were targeted by a series of unusual meetings involving intelligence assets.

Asked if Schiff would seek another briefing from the Justice Department on Barr's latest claim, Schiff said: "We'll certainly try to get to the bottom of numerous things he has been saying over the last two days - his references to investigation into the president's political opponents".

It was Hillary Clinton's campaign, as well as the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which had hired Fusion GPS-through their law firm Perkins Coie-to produce the dossier.
