Special counsel Robert Mueller on Friday turned over his long-awaited final report on the contentious Russian Federation investigation that has cast a dark shadow over Donald Trump's presidency, entangled Trump's family and resulted in criminal charges against some of the president's closest associates.
The Justice Department said Mueller delivered his final report to Attorney General William Barr and officially concluded his probe of Russian election interference and possible coordination with Trump associates.
Mueller, a former FBI director, had been examining since 2017 whether Trump's campaign conspired with Moscow to try to influence the election and whether the Republican president later unlawfully tried to obstruct his investigation.
He also notes if Mr Trump is impeached it will be described "as a coup" and risk further dividing the nation. The next steps are up to Trump's attorney general, to Congress and, in all likelihood, federal courts.
The list of officials in Trump's orbit who have pleaded guilty in Mueller's probe is lengthy, including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former Trump White House national security adviser Michael Flynn, former Trump personal attorney Michael Cohen, former Trump campaign deputy Rick Gates and former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos.
Half of Americans see a Trump victim of witch hunt
Trump's tweeted version was even more graphic: The Democrats' House investigative committees were going "stone cold insane ". Add Donald Trump as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Donald Trump news, video , and analysis from ABC News.
To President Trump, the Mueller investigation has been the "single greatest witch hunt in American political history" - a "disgrace" and "scandal" that is nothing short of "corrupt", "illegal" and "rigged". Barr said Friday in a letter notifying the Judiciary Committee that he had received Mueller's report that "I am reviewing the report and anticipate that I may be in a position to advise you of the Special Counsel's principal conclusions as soon as this weekend". And many speculate that the findings can potentially be just as damaging for Trump. According to the regulations, Barr "may determine that public release of these reports would be in the public interest, to the extent that release would comply with applicable legal restrictions".
But the delivery of the report does mean the investigation has concluded without any public charges of a criminal conspiracy between the campaign and Russian Federation, or of obstruction by the president. He has embraced an expansive view of presidential powers but also is considered a defender of the rule of law.
"Attorney General Barr must release the full report to the public", Klobuchar tweeted.
While Mueller's investigation is finished, the investigations into Trump, his business and his administration are far from over.
Gates, a key Mueller witness, continues to cooperate in several ongoing investigations, prosecutors said this month. Mark Warner, vice chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, said it should also go immediately to lawmakers. "We are confident that there is no finding of collusion by the President and this underscores what the President has been saying from the beginning - that he did nothing wrong". He offered no details of Mueller's findings.
