According to the utility's definitions, 5,000 megawatts are taken offline when Stage 5 kicks in. That is the official word from Eskom.

The Ministry of Public Enterprises, which oversees Eskom, said in a statement late on Sunday that Eskom would be assisted to fast-track the procurement of essential goods and services required to rehabilitate and fix generating units at local power stations.

Should Eskom decide to escalate load shedding to these schedules, South African residents will be without power multiple times a day (up to six times, or 12 hours), depending on the day's schedule.

In 2019, Eskom has not implemented anything above stage 4 load-shedding to date.
