Facebook blames server for outage, some users happy


"I see 3 million new users signed up for Telegram within the last 24 hours", Telegram boss CEO Pavel Durov posted on his Telegram channel.

A tweet from Facebook´s Instagram account said early Thursday, "Anddddd. we´re back", without offering details.

Many of them went to social media to report the downtime or express their frustration about the outage.

Many have questioned in recent times whether the world might be better off without social media, and this week, we got a taste of what that might be like, with Facebook and its properties (Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram) all going down, in varying capacity, for nearly an entire day.

The social network´s handling of user data has been a flashpoint for controversy since it admitted past year that Cambridge Analytica, a political consultancy which did work for Donald Trump´s 2016 election campaign, used an app that may have hijacked the private details of 87 million users.

It also caused issues for users playing games on Oculus VR headsets and Facebook's own staff using the in-house Workplace app.

The Menlo Park-giant confirmed on Twitter that it was not a cyber attack as some speculated but was due a "server configuration change".

Telegram benefited big-time from Facebook's massive 14-hour global outage. Parnell further added that the company is focused on fixing the problem as quickly as possible, it can confirm that the outage is not, in any way, related to a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack.

"We've now resolved the issues and our systems are recovering", Facebook said.

The BBC and a handful of other media outlets said it was the platform's longest ever outage.

The problems also sparked concern among advertisers, who could not access Facebook's Ad Manager platform and may have been paying for campaigns that users were unable to view.

The Facebook, which gets a vast majority of its revenue from advertising, told Bloomberg that it was still investigating the overall impact "including the possibility of refunds for advertisers".
