Canadian treasury board minister quits over SNC-Lavalin scandal

January 14, 2019 - Trudeau shuffles his cabinet after the resignation of Treasury Board president Scott Brison. Jody Wilson-Raybould is moved from Justice to Veterans Affairs, a move widely seen as a demotion.

But to lose another senior cabinet minister - another senior female minister - makes the damage exponentially worse.

He also insisted that he made clear to his former attorney general that the "decision around SNC-Lavalin was Wilson-Raybould's and hers alone to make".

Trudeau denies doing anything wrong.

Underscoring the highly charged atmosphere within the government, Wilson-Raybould told the Justice Committee that Wernick's comments reminded her of "the Saturday Night Massacre", a reference to US President Richard Nixon's firing of the US attorney-general and his deputy, because they balked at his demand they sack the special prosecutor into the Watergate crisis.

But unlike Wilson-Raybould, she did not say whether she intends to run for re-election as a Liberal this fall, although she has already been nominated.

Trudeau has been facing calls to resign over the scandal.

She was first elected in 2015 when Trudeau's became prime minister. The motion was easily defeated by the Liberal majority in the House of Commons. "Jane Philpott's resignation from cabinet clearly demonstrates a government in total chaos, led by a disgraced prime minister consumed with scandal and focused only on his political survival". According to the newspaper's story, Trudeau secretly pressured Canada's then attorney general, a woman named Jody Wilson-Raybould, trying to convince her to go easy on Lavalin.

As the House of Commons justice committee continues to hear testimony related to the case, Trudeau's party is trailing in the polls.

I still believe that after Wilson-Raybould was demoted (but before she testified), it was Trudeau's intention to give the Montreal engineering and construction firm a "remediation agreement" that would have spared it a criminal prosecution and a possible 10-year ban from bidding on federal contracts.

The leader of Canada's Conservative opposition, Andrew Scheer, has been a frequent critic of Trudeau.

In her explosive testimony last week, Wilson-Raybould said a provincial election in Quebec, Trudeau's status as a Quebec MP, and the looming general election all surfaced in conversations on the issue that continued after a decision was made.
