Lee also took time to thank his grandmother - a college graduate despite being the daughter of a slave, who saved 50 years of social security checks to put him through college all while calling him "Spiky poo" along the way.
Lee started out his acceptance speech with some profanity, telling producers not to start the clock on his speech. He was honored for co-writing BlacKkKlansman with Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz, and Kevin Willmott.

The film was nominated for a total of six Oscars, including best picture, film editing and original score.
Lee's other films include Malcolm X, She's Gotta Have It, Miracle at St. Anna, Inside Man and 25th Hour.
