Raptors nearing an agreement to land Gasol

With the end of the trade deadline comes the next big stage for the Toronto Raptors, which is looking at the buyout market for upgrades on what is now a depleted roster.

Sources told ESPN and The Athletic that the Raptors will send Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright, CJ Miles and a 2024 second-round draft selection to the Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies, however, kept Mike Conley after discussing deals for their franchise point guard with multiple teams. They added an elite centre in Marc Gasol, and according to Masai Ujiri they are not done adding pieces for the playoff run.

"Marc has been a dedicated teammate, star player and pillar of this team for the past 11 seasons", Pera said in a statement. On top of that, Greg Monroe and Malachi Richardson were moved in separate deals as a way to gain some roster and financial flexibility.

Given their position in the standings (they have the second-most wins in the NBA) and the uncertain future of Kawhi Leonard, the Raptors are clearly in win-now mode. He has played the most minutes in Grizzlies history, is first in points scored, first in rebounds, first in blocks and first in free-throws made.

The 12-year National Basketball Association veteran has been enjoying an incredible bounce-back year in Memphis after only playing 12 games last season.

The 34-year-old Gasol is averaging 15.7 points per game, 8.6 rebounds and a career-high 4.7 assists.

The six-time All-Star was on the court for the first time since making a trade request almost two weeks ago.

Valanciunas has been out since mid-December with a thumb injury but was going to make his return Thursday night against the Atlanta Hawks. Anthony Davis is averaging 29.3 points and 13.3 rebounds while Jrue Holiday is averaging 20.9 points and eight assists.

Gasol also has a $25.6 million player option for next season. Miles ($8.7 million) and Valanciunas ($17.6 million) have player options, while Wright will become a restricted free agent and is eligible to receive a $3.6 million qualifying offer in June.
