Donald Trump: 'The chant should be now finish the wall'

As he joined Pelosi in rebutting the president's January 8 Oval Office address, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY decried Trump's "ineffective, unnecessary border wall".

Trump indicated that to secure funding for a wall on the border with Mexico, he will declare a national emergency on 15 February, the deadline for funding talks initiated after the 35-day shutdown, the longest in USA history.

"So now they say, 'Oh, if he doesn't get the wall...' They make that the only issue, but it's not going to work because I'm building the wall", he said to reporters at the White House.

Talks between the White House and congressional Republicans and Democrats are not expected to produce a bill containing the $5.7bn Trump wants for a wall.

During an interview with the New York Times published on Friday, Trump spoke about his progress on the border.

"We're in a very strong legal standing - we are doing it regardless". Trump increasingly appears prepared to go that route, saying Friday that "I think there's a good chance we'll have to do that". "People that didn't have any idea - they didn't have a clue as to what was happening, they now know exactly what's happening". "I'm for whatever works, which means avoiding a shutdown and avoiding the president feeling he should declare a national emergency", McConnell said during his weekly news conference in the Capitol. We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions and unlock the extraordinary promise of America's future.

Previewing next Tuesday's speech before Congress, a senior administration official said Trump will "cast an inspiring vision of American greatness".

Trump asserted that Pelosi can "keep playing her games", but his side will "win" in the end.

On CBS, Trump accused his political rival of being "very bad for our country".

Hammill said Trump had mischaracterized Pelosi's position, since she has proposed ways to secure the border without a wall. "I think the Democrats don't want border security".

In a "Face the Nation" interview set to air Sunday, Trump told host Margaret Brennan the congresswoman was engaging in "very bad politics" in hopes of scoring "a political point".

"Well, I think that she was very rigid - which I would expect - but I think she is very bad for our country", Trump responded. "That accounts for about 6 percent of our traffic", Border Patrol chief Raul Ortiz told journalists during President Trump's January 10 visit to Rio Grande Valley, Texas.

On the same day he met with the president, McConnell publicly announced his opposition to a national emergency declaration as he encouraged the 17-member congressional committee to find another way out of the impasse.
