Golden Globes honor ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ ‘Green Book’ in a night of surprises

It was a disappointing night for A Star Is Born and Mary Poppins Returns at the Golden Globes. It was expected to win at least two.

Darren Criss gave a shout out to representation and his Filipino mom at his acceptance speech when he won best actor in a mini-series or motion picture made for television for his role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

Instead, two of the biggest awards Sunday night went to Bohemian Rhapsody.

Glenn Close, who is also vying for best drama actress for her role in "The Wife", was among the few who opted for darker hues and wore a black gown adorned by a diamond ribbon at the neck line.

Regina King's acceptance speech for winning best actress in a supporting role for If Beale Street Could Talk is also worth noting: "I'm making a vow-and it's going to be tough-that everything I produce is going to be 50 percent women", she said. Lady Gaga, whose soulful performance anchored "A Star Is Born", had been considered the favorite. It was the musician's first leading part. The audience stood up and cheered when her name was announced.

For the second year in a row, Rachel Brosnahan won best actress in a comedy for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel", the Amazon series about a 1950s housewife in New York City who finds she has a gift for stand-up comedy.

Oh also won a Globe herself, for her performance in the BBC America drama series Killing Eve. Voting for that awards ceremony opens up Monday morning so the winners at the Globes will be fresh on the minds of voters. They also alluded to the (as of now) host-less Academy Awards, joking about holding a contest in which "one lucky audience member will host the Oscars".

While results were a mixed bag-total viewers dipped 2 percent from a year-ago, while the demo improved 4 percent versus the 2018 show-the Globes by far has been TV's most stable awards show franchise.

Cooper is at 3/1 to win the Best Actor Oscar at the awards ceremony on February 25.

"Green Book", the inspirational true story about a budding friendship between an African-American pianist and a white bouncer on a tour of the Deep South in the early 1960s, won three Globes, including best picture in the musical/comedy category.

"I'm just happy that our show happened when it did and I can look back and say once more, 'I'm so glad we had this time together, '" she said, channeling a line from her show's theme song and tugging on her ear, her trademark and the way she used to say hello to her grandmother.
