Just days later, his homophobic tweets from 2009-2011 resurfaced on social media, and the Oscars asked Hart to apologize for his comments or step down.
The interview, which can be seen on Friday's episode, was originally scheduled to air on Monday, but the conversation was so "incredible and honest", according to DeGeneres, that she didn't want her viewers to have to wait.
"When I go on that stage, it will be because I've somehow figured out a way to win the Oscar", Hart said. Let me assess, just to sit in the space and really think.
"To see a friend reach a moment like that, to be able to share it with him and then two days later the entire energy is shifted, it hit him pretty hard", says Cannon, who's now hosting the hit new Fox series The Masked Singer. "This is stuff I've addressed and apologized for already", Kevin shares. I know that I've taken the ten years to put my apology to work. I look at life through a different lens, and because of that I live it a different way ... "Because that was wrong".
She told Hart she phoned the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences because she wants him to host the 91st Oscars.
DeGeneres shared the first clip on her Twitter account, captioning it "I believe in forgiveness".

At 11:30 a.m., scientists involved with the New Horizons mission will describe the images and data returned by the spacecraft. Instead, team members and their guests gathered nearby for back-to-back countdowns at midnight and again 33 minutes later.
DeGeneres told Hart she contacted the Academy to ask that they reconsider their position and was surprised by their response. Later, coming back from commercial break, she introduced her guest as "this year's Oscars host, Kevin Hart".
The Academy has not named a replacement host for its February 24 awards show. Then a day later, someone unearthed and circulated homophobic tweets the actor and comic made in 2008. DeGeneres said that while she is sensitive to homophobia, she also accepts his apology.
"You have grown, you have apologised, you are apologising again right now". Twitter users didn't have to comb through "40,000 tweets" worth of content to find Hart's homophobic jokes as Hart insists. "I understand why people would be upset which is why I made the choice to not use them anymore". The comedian explains how he has apologized in the past for the same exact incident, and shares the reason for leaving the host gig is because he doesn't want the cloud of hate to distract the audience from the prestigious Oscars night.
Hart opens up to DeGeneres about being hired to host the 2019 Oscars, which he describes as a dream come true, especially as he would have been only the fourth African-American to host the ceremony. The star allegedly said to Ellen that people were out to ruin him.
Hart believes his previous apologies for the tweets at a 2012 press junket and the 2015 promotional tour for Get Hard were enough, but stepped down as the Oscars host and reiterated the sentiment when they reemerged. "Either I can move forward, or I can't".
DeGeneres continued, "As a gay person".
