911 mobile services are gradually returning after CenturyLink outage

Many CenturyLink customers across the USA were without internet Thursday amid a lengthy outage that stretched from NY to California. Some reports told of people unable to get gas as card readers shut down at some gas stations, and others of ATM's glitching.

The company says it's working to restore service and appears to be making progress.

CenturyLink expects the service to be restored within hours.

Police and fire departments throughout the state took to social media to alert followers to the problem, which was causing some 911 calls made from landlines and cellphones to not go through to the appropriate dispatchers.

The widespread Internet outage for CenturyLink customers continued into midmorning Friday as the company's engineers raced to fix a network element that disrupted many of its telecommunications services nationally.

Asked about the FCC investigation, a spokeswoman for CenturyLink said the company had been in contact with the federal agency and would cooperate fully. ISP CenturyLink's network recently went down in certain parts of the United States (including Washington, Idaho, and Missouri) knocking out each location's 911 services in the process.

"Its breadth and duration are particularly troubling", he said. The late-night response to the Portland outage was especially jarring for some, considering they received loud, late-night mobile phone messages explaining that their 911 services were out.

Monroe, Louisiana-based CenturyLink didn't provide details of the problem and it didn't indicate how many customers were affected.

Regulators in Washington state also said they were opening an investigation into an outage of its statewide 911 service.

As of Friday evening, there was no indication the coast-to-coast disruption of 911 calling had exacerbated any emergency situations or resulted in injuries or deaths.

Customers of the internet, phone and TV provider have been hit by the outage, including in Idaho, New Mexico and Minnesota.
