Storm dumps more than 10 inches of snow in parts of Texas

American Airlines also issued a travel alert for nine airports throughout the Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia. A state of emergency has been declared in North Carolina, with some areas reporting as much as 0.5m (18.5ins) of snow over the weekend.

"We're preparing for days of impact, not hours", Cooper said, urging caution. "Don't be fooled, this storm is treacherous".

In North Raleigh, residents woke up to several inches of snow that blanketed roads, cars and homes. One tractor-trailer ran off the road and into a river. "It's December. This is not the time of year that they would typically get this stuff".

As of 5:45 p.m., a combined 86,337 power customers in SC were without electricity, internet and phone service.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said Monday that the worst of the storm had passed most of the state but residents - particularly motorists - should keep watch for risky conditions. Traffic crews treated roads ahead of the storm.

Richmond International Airport reported Sunday that almost 100 flights had been canceled, WTVR reported. SCE&G and Santee Cooper reported far fewer outages, but that is likely the result of where the majority of their customers are located.

Meteorologists warn that more slick and icy roads may come as snow and ice melt then freeze back over again as temperatures drop again later in the day.

The National Weather Service predicted 1-3 inches of snow in north and central Arkansas with isolated areas exceeding 4 inches in the northeast.
