Mary Kom bags sixth Gold at World Boxing Championship


With six gold medals and a silver, the diminutive Mary Kom now stands as the tallest woman boxer in the 17-year-old history of the event and equals legendary male boxer Cuban Felix Savon's World championships record.

The chants continued for India's flag-bearer in women's boxing as Mary Kom became the first boxer to win her sixth World Championships gold medal.

Social media was flooded with congratulatory messages for Mary Kom with actors, politicians, notable athletes and fans paying tribute to arguably one of the greatest boxers of all time. Hanna is 22 years old, while Mary Com is 35 years old. It was only towards the end of first round that the Ukrainian managed to connect a straight punch against Mary Kom. She remains the only Indian female boxer to have won an Olympic medal, a bronze at the 2012 London Games, and also the only one with a Commonwealth Games gold, won in Gold Coast earlier this year. The huge victory fetched the Manipur-born woman a sixth World Championship title.

Big B took to his official Instagram account to post a picture of boxing gloves gifted to him by Mary Kom and congratulated the boxer, alongside a heartfelt caption which read, "Mary Kom. what huge honour you bring to the country".

"I am still dreaming about winning the gold in 2020", she quipped. Mary Kom, has won many tournaments since returning to the sport after becoming a mother.

She thrashed Okhota via an unanimous decision 5-0.
