Border Patrol Arrests 42 Migrants While Mexico Deports Others

The Mexican government said later on Sunday it had retaken control of the border crossing after almost 500 migrants tried to cross the US border "in a violent manner", and vowed to immediately deport Central Americans who attempt to enter the United States illegally.

Border Patrol agents say 42 migrants are under arrest after the migrant caravan attempted to force their way across the US border.

Over the weekend, USA border agents shot several rounds of tear gas after some migrants attempted to penetrate various points along the border and threw what appeared to be rocks at US authorities.

Across Twitter views reacted to the news and images, expressing horror and shame at the officials who used tear gas and potentially other forms of physical retaliation at the people crossing the border.

"If it was a protest, it was a really stupid way to go about it because there were individuals who started throwing rocks and other projectiles", Shawn Moran, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council, told the paper of the November 24, 2013, incident.

Mexico's Interior Ministry said in a statement it would immediately deport those people arrested on its side and would reinforce security.

As migrants tried to cross the border, authorities on the United States side used tear gas to disperse them.

"We will close the Border permanently if need be", he added before calling on Congress to fund the controversial border wall.

Around 500 men, women and children, part of a caravan of roughly 5,000 mainly Hondurans who have been trekking towards the United States for weeks, scrambled over a rusted metal fence and surged into a concrete riverbed towards San Diego on Sunday.

Among those affected were pregnant women and children, according to Honduran migrant Myrna Lissete Amaya, who said some of the younger kids fainted.

The tweet comes as 42 migrants were arrested on the U.S. side of the Mexico border, according to a San Diego Sector Border Patrol official. There can be no disagreement when it comes to firing tear gas on innocent families.

"They were being rushed by some very tough people and they used tear gas", Trump replied.

The US border patrol threw tear gas on the migrants from a distance in a bid to disperse them.

He said that it was a "very risky situation" for agents and they responded appropriately. He said that Tijuana is struggling to shelter the large number of migrants. There are more than 7,000 at the USA border in Tijuana and the city of Mexicali, with more than 800 others still moving toward the border.

CBP temporarily halted border traffic on Sunday, but allowed crossings to resume Monday morning.

Numerous thousands who have gathered in Tijuana have said they will wait there until they can seek asylum.
