One dead, two injured in Melbourne CBD stabbing

A knife-wielding man set fire to a pickup truck laden with gas cylinders in the Australian city of Melbourne yesterday and stabbed three people, killing one, before he was shot by police.

Officers were confronted near the burning auto by a man "brandishing a knife and threatening them" while passers-by called out that people had been stabbed, he said.

The overwhelming majority of attacks IS claims are undertaken by men acting in its name but who have no operational links to the group.

When asked if police should have shot Khalif in the leg rather than the chest, Commissioner Ashton said police were trained to kill if they believed their life or a member of the public's life was at risk.

"Equally, those strangers, people who were by-standers who knew nobody involved, who stepped in without a moment's hesitation, to render support and assistance to the courageous members of the Victoria Police, they too are people whose qualities make all of us proud as well".

A video of the attack, which has gone viral, shows a man attacking the police with a knife, moments after the vehicle exploded in flames.

Khalif had planned to cause an explosion in Melbourne by igniting gas cylinders in his vehicle, police say.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed three people were injured.

"Australians will never be intimidated by these appalling attacks".
