China holds 1st expo for imports amid trade war with US

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday met with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who will attend the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) opening Monday in Shanghai. "As a nation we look forward to an open Chinese market for Kenya's exports", Uhuru said in a tweet after the meeting. He added that the imports would be increased cutting costs for importers and improving consumer spending power.

About 3,600 companies from more than 170 nations, regions and global groups are taking part in the country's first national-level expo for imports, the Chinese government said. "We are focusing specifically on smaller businesses as the scope for growth that an opportunity of this stature presents is so much larger for our smaller clients", Mudhavan said.

The expo, themed "New Era, Shared Future", will run until November 10. Participating countries have put on display a variety of products from agricultural products to consumer goods.

D'Andrea said the expo will definitely help many countries reduce their trade deficits with China, but it will not address the country's internal reform deficit.

He went on to escalate the feud into a full-press offensive - boosting military support for rival Taiwan, accusing China of interfering in United States elections, stepping up denunciations of Beijing´s human rights record and curtailing its access to U.S. nuclear technology.

Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged on Monday to boost the nation's total imports to more than US$40 trillion in the next 15 years, while warning that U.S. protectionism has "dealt a blow" to the global free trade system amid a mounting trade war with Washington. "Micron regards the development of Jinhua as a threat and has tried various means to stall or even sabotage it", the company said, urging its rival to "immediately stop wrongdoings and facilitate the resumption of normal trade and cooperation activities between the two parties".

He said "economic globalization is facing setbacks, multilateralism and the free trade system is under attack, factors of instability and uncertainty are numerous, and risks and obstacles are increasing".

China expects to import $30 trillion worth of goods and $10 trillion worth of services in the next 15 years, Mr Xi said.

China ranks 59th out of the 62 countries evaluated by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development in terms of openness to foreign direct investment. It's not hard to come to the conclusion that there is great potential for further consumption in China, and imported commodities have a big role to play.

China is willing to negotiate with the USA on issues of mutual concern, and push for a "mutually acceptable" resolution to their economic and trade issues, Vice President Wang Qishan said Tuesday.

"All in all, the favourable conditions are in place for the long-term, healthy and steady growth of the Chinese economy", Xi said.

"To use a metaphor, the Chinese economy is not a pond, but an ocean".

Xi also didn't reveal any further details about China's plans for further stimulus measures to support the slowing economy, which were flagged last week.
