Oscar strengthens into tropical storm; no threat to land

Officials at the hurricane center said it was about 815 miles east-southeast of Bermuda and moving slowly west, but was expected to turn northwest soon.

The storm is moving to the west at 16 miles per hour (26 kph).

Oscar is the 15th named storm of the six-month Atlantic hurricane season that ends November 30.

"It is expected to move into an area where environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for further development, and a tropical or subtropical storm is expected to form by early this weekend", the National Hurricane Center said.

Forecasters expect Oscar to transition to a tropical storm by early next week. Then, Oscar is forecast to begin moving toward the north Monday night or Tuesday, and then head northwest away from the United States by Wednesday. Eastern Daylight Time on Saturday, October 27, 2018, due the presence of Sub-Tropical Storm Oscar over the Atlantic Ocean.

The system "is gradually becoming better defined and the associated shower and thunderstorm activity is showing signs of organization", the Miami-based Hurricane Center said in an 8 a.m. advisory.
