1 dead in shooting at University of Utah

Lauren McCluskey, a senior communication major from Pullman, Washington, was found dead in the back seat of a parked auto near a residential hall on campus.

The woman said that Rowland quickly tried to get physical, which caused her to end the date. According to Watkins' statement, there will be an on-campus vigil for McCluskey held on Wednesday.

According to Jill McCluskey, Lauren's mother, Lauren had dated Rowland for about a month but he had lied to her about his name, age and criminal history.

Rowland was spotted on surveillance video at various locations around the University of Utah's campus during the weekend before McCluskey's murder. He was found inside the church a short time later with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

An investigation was initiated, but Brophy admitted, he did not know Rowland was on parole. He said McCluskey allowed Rowland to stay with her that night and borrow her vehicle the next day. They said he had a previous relationship with the victim, but was not a student himself, according to media reports.

McCluskey, who ranks 10th in the pentathlon in school history, was returning home to her apartment after a night class on Monday when she was apparently attacked, her parents said in a statement.

On Oct. 10, McCluskey's mother, Jill McCluskey, a professor at Washington State University, contacted campus police dispatch because she was anxious her daughter would be forced to go alone to retrieve her vehicle from Rowland. "Our deepest sympathy is extended to Lauren's family and friends".

Students and athletes from other schools throughout Utah were among those in the crowd to remember McCluskey and show support for her friends and family.

The University of Utah has canceled classes for Tuesday after a deadly shooting on its campus. McCluskey, a 21-year old Communications student, was shot by her former boyfriend that resulted to her death. As a felon, Rowland could not possess a gun; a man who had loaned the gun to him said Rowland claimed he had a girlfriend and wanted to teach her how to shoot.

The shooting occurred just days before the one-year anniversary of the death of U. student ChenWei Guo, who was shot and killed on campus by a man who attempted to steal his auto and kidnap a woman who was with him.

Rowland pleaded guilty to enticing a minor over the internet and attempted forcible sex abuse in an agreement with prosecutors, records show.

Chief Dale Brophy said Tuesday that Lauren McCluskey had filed a police report on October 12 against Melvin Rowland.

He later confronted the 21-year-old McCluskey in the parking lot, dragged her into a auto and shot her multiple times in the back seat, Brophy said at a news conference.

Police responded to the incident and later found McCluskey shot to death in the backseat of a vehicle.

McCluskey's family released a statement via Buzzfeed News, which gave more details about Lauren's relationship to her suspected killer, and what may have led to her death. She then filed harassment reports to the campus police on October 12 and 13. She was an honor student at Pullman High School and was a state champion in the high jump.

"It didn't seem like it was real at all", Harrison said, adding that it became more real when she learned that a student had died. Austin Boutain, the shooter, was sentenced to life in prison without parole in September.
