But constituents in ME have told a different story since Collins' speech last Friday, in which she suggested that Dr. Christine Blasey Ford incorrectly remembered Kavanaugh as the person who assaulted her when the two were in high school and claimed the judge had displayed an appropriate temperament for a Supreme Court justice.
During her October 5 speech, Collins claimed that Kavanaugh "will work to lessen the divisions" in the U.S. But during his angry, bitter diatribe before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 27, Trump's nominee hardly sounded nonpartisan.
Where they saw opposition to Obamacare in his rulings, she saw a careful judge whose reasoning that the Affordable Care Act was a use of Congress' taxing power closely mirrored the logic that Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. would later use to declare the 2010 health care law mostly constitutional.
"I do not believe that Brett Kavanaugh was her assailant", said Collins, R-Maine. Kavanaugh showed himself to be a severe partisan, and Collins, in effect, endorsed that partisanship when she voted to put him on the Supreme Court.
States "are very busy passing all kinds of laws that would limit a woman's right to choose", Hirono said, pointing out that it is the constitutionality of those laws that could come before the Supreme Court.
"I do not believe that Brett Kavanaugh will overturn Roe v. Wade", Collins told Bash on CNN.
Ford's lawyers told NBC News on Sunday that Ford and her family have still been unable to return to their home due to the death threats she continues to face after testifying against Kavanaugh on Sep. 27.
And where Democrats saw a conspiracy in the pick, saying Mr. Trump wants Justice Kavanaugh on the court to shield him from legal jeopardy in the special counsel's Russian Federation investigation, Ms. Collins pointed to three cases in which the judge repeatedly cited in his confirmation hearing as guiding lights.
Among the transcripts, is one of an interview with Judge. "Brett Kavanaugh assaulted her".

Don't forget, Samuel rushed for 1,286 yards in three years while at Ohio State, adding 1,249 receiving yards. Expect Barkley to either double his carries this week or have backup Wayne Gallman carry more than twice.
Turning to the assault accusations, Ms. Collins said she found accuser Christine Blasey Ford's testimony "sincere, painful and compelling".
Susan Collins called Dr. Ford a liar today on television. She gave an impassioned, attractive speech yesterday.
"As far as Susan Rice is concerned, her family has a home in ME, but she doesn't live in the state of Maine".
"The last 20-so years I've been a homeowner in the state of Maine, so it's not completely insane", she said, adding: "My bottom line is I'm going to give it due consideration, after the midterms".
Sweet said a big factor would be whether Collins, 65, decides to run at all.
Her constituents in ME have taken notice, raising some four million dollars for her eventual 2020 opponent. "That's what I did in this case", she said.
Collins and her staff have said the aggressive tactics to sway her vote are a wasted effort.
"Senator Collins will be well-funded [too], I can assure you", McConnell said. But the Christian Right didn't push for Kavanaugh's confirmation so aggressively because they think he shares the more libertarian views that retired Justice Anthony Kennedy had on abortion rights; Kavanaugh was nominated because he is an "originalist" or "strict constructionist" and a hardcore social conservative.
