In a statement, the US Navy had said that the two vessels came agonisingly close of colliding with each other, with a distance of 41 meters and lashed out at the Chinese warship which was "conducting a series of increasingly aggressive maneuvers, accompanied by warnings for the Decatur to depart the area".

Mike Pence, the USA vice president, will sharpen criticism of Chinese foreign policy with a blunt warning on Thursday that Washington will not back away from what it sees as Beijing's intimidatory tactics in the South China Sea.

The Chinese defence ministry said yesterday it opposes the USA warship's entry into the waters "around China's islands and reefs".

China has built airstrips and artificial islands in the South China Sea, actions condemned by Defense Secretary James Mattis in Singapore in June.

The images show the Lanzhou approaching the Decatur from behind and to the left of the U.S. ship.

During the routine operation, a Chinese Luyang II-class guided-missile destroyer confronted the United States warship.

We came in very low and unfortunately the flight attendants panicked and started yelling and I was trying to be calm and help. He thanked the airline crew and local people who went to the rescue passengers, for their quick response in the evacuation.

Senior Chinese officials, Mr. Pence will say, pushed business leaders to condemn US trade actions and in one instance threatened to deny a business license for a major USA corporation if it refused to speak out against US administration policies. "Beijing is also trying to project its power farther than ever before", Mr. Pence will say, adding that "we will not be intimidated; we will not stand down". "Times of uncertainty are exactly that and it's our job to work with everybody to reduce that uncertainty". The ministry gave no details, but based on previous visits by American secretaries of state, he would be likely to meet with China's foreign minister, senior foreign policy advisers and President Xi Jinping.

"We would view any use of intimidation or aggressive tactics as destabilising and potentially risky", he said in a statement.

"Relations between China and the other claimants have been relatively calm recently, but the conflict in the South China Sea has been intensified by the involvement of the USA", he said.

"The Chinese military will resolutely perform its defense duties and continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard our sovereignty and the regional peace and stability", spokesman Wu Qian said.

The US and China have clashed over a wide range of issues, including trade,Taiwan, sanctions, and increased American military activity in the disputed South China Sea, which China and other Asian nations hold certain claims to. In response to the sanctions, China summoned the American ambassador and defense attache to deliver a protest, and recalled its navy commander from a US trip.

Beijing has also lashed a project of american arms sales to Taiwan, cancelled a port call of the US Navy to Hong Kong and reminded us of a chinese admiral's visit to the United States. Pompeo has announced that the U.S.is canceling a 1955 treaty with Iran establishing economic relations and consular rights between the two nations.
