Meanwhile, the United States and India continue to discuss Washington's threat to impose economic sanctions on New Delhi should it proceed with the S-400 procurement as a result of the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) which came into effect in January 2018.
"We urge all of our allies and partners to forgo transactions with Russian Federation that would trigger sanctions under CAATSA", a State Department Spokesperson told PTI when asked about India's plan to purchase multi-billion S-400 missile defense system from Russian Federation. "Beijing will monitor this S-400 issue very closely and read the tea-leaves carefully for long-term strategic implications".
Ambassador Ashok Sajjanhar told IANS in an interview here ahead of Russian President Vladimir Putin's official visit to India that he is also "reasonably confident" that New Delhi would be granted a waiver from the USA sanctions on Iran, due to kick in from November 4, on oil purchases from the Persian Gulf nation. The US is now India's second biggest arms supplier.
"As we know, spying, like prostitution, is one of the world's most important professions", Putin said, drawing applause from the audience.
The S-400 is an upgraded version of the S-300 systems.
