US President Donald Trump used a session on nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction at the UN Security Council to defend his May 8 decision to abandon the nuclear pact under which Tehran limited its nuclear program in return for the easing of US, European and worldwide economic sanctions.

Aside from Iran, the other participants are Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the European Union.

"I imagine the corrupt ayatollahs and IGRC were laughing this morning", Pompeo added at the event in NY, referring to the elite Revolutionary Guards, in a speech that was interrupted several times by anti-war protesters.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who also addressed the U.N., launched a scathing attack on Trump and his administration accusing the United States on Tuesday of trying to overthrow his government.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the decision to set up such a vehicle had already been taken and that technical experts would meet again to flesh out the details.

"Remaining members of the deal have taken very good steps forward but Iran has higher expectations", he said, adding that expected US sanctions in November on Iran were illegal and "nothing new".

Addressing the council after Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron hit back, declaring that concerns about Iran can not be tackled with "a policy of sanctions and containment".

'Beluga whale' spotted in River Thames near London
Beluga whales are usually found in the Arctic Ocean, with males measuring as long as 5.5 metres and can also weigh up to 1,600kg. A female northern bottlenose whale was discovered swimming in the river in central London , going past the Houses of Parliament.

Noting that the U.S. "has chosen the path of unilateralism and turns a cold shoulder to worldwide institutions and regulations", the Iranian president emphasized, "The important thing is that no one - except for one or two countries - has America's back today".

French President Emmanuel Macron called for continued sales of oil by Iran, saying the flow would lower global prices and also benefit peace efforts.

"Remaining members of the deal have taken very good steps forward, but Iran has higher expectations", he said, adding that forthcoming U.S. sanctions in November on Iran were illegal and "nothing new".

Rouhani, in his General Assembly speech, suggested Trump suffered from a "weakness of intellect" after having withdrawn the United States from big powers' 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, a move that dismayed European allies of Washington. "Pressure from only one side? No!"

The five other world powers who signed the nuclear deal remain strongly committed to it and the new financial facility is nearly certain to anger the Trump administration.

"The Iranian regime's track record over the past 40 years has revealed it as among the worst violators of the UN Charter and UN Security Council resolutions", he told a conference held on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly meeting.

Without naming countries, the U.S. president noted that "some nations are already violating UN sanctions" including illegal ship-to-ship transfers of oil and said compliance was "very important".

The European powers and the United States agree that a broader deal needs to be struck with Iran that tackles its long-term nuclear activities, ballistic missile program and to curb its regional influence.
