Jets say defense knew Stafford's signals in rout

That might be a leg-up for Patricia on Monday, considering the Jets and Pats are division rivals.

The referee for the game is Bill Vinovich, who is refereeing his ninth Jets game since 2004, including the 2006 playoff game at New England and the 2015 home win over Miami.

Can Sam Darnold lead the Jets to the road victory in his National Football League debut? He was poised, efficient and made enough throws to make believers out of even the biggest Jets skeptics.

Darnold wasn't flawless the rest of the way, but going 16-of-20 for 198 yards and 2 TDs after throwing the INT and taking two ill-advised sacks was remarkable. "Definitely something of a bright point for the team, for sure", Lee said, "but as a defense, it doesn't change what we have to do".

Stafford threw four interceptions - one shy of his career high - and left the game briefly in the third quarter after being hit from the front and back by the swarming, hard-hitting Jets.

The Jets even got defensive and special teams touchdowns, something that happens about as often as a Bowles belly laugh.

Following the game, the Jets players said that the formations, as well as hand signals from Matthew Stafford, tipped the plays to the NY defenders. Quandre Diggs intercepted his ill-advised lob down the left sideline on the first play from scrimmage and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown 20 seconds into the game. He was mercifully taken out of the game midway through the fourth quarter and replaced by Matt Cassel with Detroit down 31. They found out quickly Patricia was bringing a change of pace: a demonstrative and louder leader. Those 31 points went unanswered by the Lions after Detroit tied the game at 17.

But the Jets answered in resounding fashion. They were thoroughly outclassed by a Jets team that finished last season 5-11, and that unveiled Sam Darnold, the youngest quarterback (21 years, 97 days) to start a season opener in the Super Bowl era. It was the first of two interceptions by Lee.

Maybe it was just poor coverage by Detroit, but Roberts also had a 43-yard punt return in the first quarter in addition to his touchdown.

Jets running back Isaiah Crowell gained 102 yards on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns.

After 26 more National Football League teams got their 2018 seasons under way Sunday, it's time tonight for the last two games of Week 1.

Darnold's start to this game was pretty much the worst-case scenario. Then Darron Lee intercepted Stafford and went 36 yards for a touchdown.

Since his first pass, which was taken back for Lions pick-six, Darnold has looked like a whole new player.
