On August 25, 2018, Senator John McCain died after a long battle with brain cancer. John McCain, R-Ariz., looks at the casket during a memorial service at the Arizona Capitol on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, in Phoenix.

A choir from the Jesuit-run Brophy College Preparatory school that two of McCain's sons attended was scheduled to sing "Amazing Grace" and "Arizona" during the church service.

People holding US flags and campaign style placards with the word "McCain" lined part of the 8-mile (13-kilometer) route that the motorcade with McCain's casket will take from the Arizona State Capitol to the church.

McCain's staff says the campaign-style signs are replicas of his 2008 presidential campaign.

McCain stood out during the last two years of his life as a leading Republican critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, a fellow Republican whom McCain's family has asked not to attend his funeral on Saturday at Washington's National Cathedral.
