Transgender woman, Somali-American win United States primary nods

A former Somali refugee won her race in Minnesota, as did a celebrated teacher in CT who could now become the state's first black Democrat in Congress.

But the state now has a popular moderate Republican governor, Phil Scott, who is favoured to win re-election in November.

"In order for her to win, she needs to make the case that Phil Scott has been a failed governor in his first two years in office as governor", Middlebury College political science professor emeritus Eric Davis said Wednesday.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders also easily won his Democratic Senate primary, though he's expected to run in November as an independent.

Christine Hallquist made history as the first transgender candidate for a state's governorship after winning the Democratic primary in Vermont on Tuesday. She spent 12 years at the Vermont Electric Cooperative before running for governor.

Stefanowski, a former banking officer, became the first candidate in CT history to petition for a spot on the ballot and win a major party nomination for state office.

Rather than just focusing on Chittenden county - which encompasses Burlington and is by far the largest county in Vermont - Hallquist said she took her message around the state. Like Hallquist, both are Democrats.

'Predator priests' accused of sexually abusing more than 1,000 children
Sexual abuse scandals have rocked the Roman Catholic Church for decades, not just in the USA but throughout the world. On multiple occasions, Pennsylvania priests would take their victims out of town with the goal of disorienting them.

Hallquist campaigned on a promise to build up renewable energy and boost the state's rural economy by expanding broadband access.

"I think we should probably take a look at that to be perfectly honest", Governor Scott told reporters when asked if he thought 14-year-olds should be eligible to run. In Tuesday's Wisconsin and Minnesota primaries, Republican candidates battled to be the strongest supporter of the president, proving - yet again - Trump's dominance in the Republican Party. His primary race against Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson became a contest over who insulted Trump the least. Tim Pawlenty, who was attempting a comeback eight years after he left office.

Mr Kobach, who is Kansas' secretary of state, has advised President Trump on illegal immigration policy, and served on his now-defunct voter fraud commission.

Ellison won the Democratic nomination to be Minnesota's attorney general, despite accusations of domestic abuse from a former girlfriend.

He addressed the allegation in his victory speech.

On Tuesday, Scott was greeted enthusiastically by a gathering of roughly 40 staff, family members and close friends at a low-key victory celebration at the Comfort Inn in Berlin.

Thank you can't even begin to express the gratitude I feel right now.
