Russian Federation appointed actor Steven Seagal as a special representative to improve ties with the United States. "In global practice it is possible to draw Parallels with the functions of the goodwill ambassadors of the United Nations", - said the press service of the foreign Ministry in its statement.
Seagal, who sometimes appears on Russian state TV to talk about his views and career, was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station Russia Today (RT) as welcoming the appointment.

CNN has reached out to Seagal's spokesperson for comment. In his first big role in the 1988 movie Above the Law, Seagal played a former Central Intelligence Agency agent, and in one of his latest films, Mercenary: Absolution, he played a contract killer.
Russian Federation isn't the only country offering overtures to Seagal.
Seagal's grandmother was born in Vladivostok, and the actor and Putin share a passion for martial arts.
In 2014, Seagal posted a statement on his website to clarify that he had been misquoted by media outlets saying he called Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, the world's greatest leader. Seagal says: "I'll never, ever falter".
