Perhaps as a reaction to last year's ratings for the 90th annual Academy Awards, which were the lowest ever, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences tweeted Wednesday that a new category is "being designed around achievement in popular film".

The devil is in the details. It's a separate category from the Best Picture trophy, although the Hollywood Reporter reports that films will likely be able to compete for both prizes.

This is especially interesting as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has never won an Oscar - embarrassingly, despite Suicide Squad grabbing a Best Makeup and Hairstyling gong previous year - but that could very well change with this new award category.

The Oscars are adding a new category to honour popular films and promising a brisk three-hour ceremony on a much earlier air date of February 9, 2020. But they've sought to address it, in years past, by zipping through the technical awards (which are held and taped days before the main Oscars telecast) and hectoring presenters to keep their acceptance speeches pithy.

The 91st Oscars telecast will air on Sunday, February 24, 2019. "Every single one was either nominated or won Best Picture with the exception of 'Snow White, ' which was given an honorary Oscar". And what criteria will be used to determine whether a film qualifies as "popular?"

In order to fit all the awards into the new 3-hour timeslot, certain awards will be presented during commercial breaks.
