"This will happen next July 27, 2018 when we will have a wonderful total lunar eclipse, with the moon showing its unbelievable red colour and Mars, the Red Planet, will reach its opposition, actually a so-called "great opposition", offering the best observing conditions since 2003". Additionally, the eclipse will only be visible from Australia as it is beginning and from South America as it is ending.

A picture taken on January 31, 2018 shows the moon rising behind a mountain during a lunar eclipse, referred to as the "super blue blood moon" near Syria-Turkey border at the Hassa district in Hatay.

On the evening of 27 July, we are waiting for a total lunar Eclipse. This glorious sight occurs because of the way sunlight bends (refracts) through the Earth's atmosphere.

A lunar eclipse can last for up to several hours. Then the Moon will start to gradually come out of Earth's shadow and partial eclipse will end at 3:49 am IST on July 28.

Here's when totality will begin in the regions where the entire eclipse will be visible.

For people in the United Kingdom, the "blood moon" will rise in the south-eastern sky already immersed completely in the Earth's shadow. This slower moving full Moon will take longer time and greater distance of Earth's umbral shadow cone to travel.

Although the longest eclipse, Dr Sarun said the red moon will be smaller than usual because it will be at the farthest point from the Earth this year - at 406,086 kilometre from the Earth.

The red moon is possible because while the moon is in total shadow, some light from the sun passes through Earth's atmosphere and is bent toward the moon. The best view of the eclipse will be reserved for the Indian Ocean, because it will be facing the Moon.

Because of this, it gives the moon a reddish-orange colour on the moon, which is why it's called a blood moon. And weather permitting, the Full Buck moon should not disappoint.

Sadly, North Americans will miss out entirely. It will be Mars's closest approach to our planet in over a decade so the planet will appear bigger in the sky.

Some say the lunar eclipse is the end of the world Doomsday preachers have been suggesting that the blood moon heralds the end of the world, as biblical passages talk about the moon turning the colour of blood prior to the apocalypse.
