Washington-Seoul joint military drill suspended

But as the days went by, the US and Seoul began discussions about temporarily suspending the large Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises that usually take place in August and possibly other joint drills while nuclear diplomacy with North Korea continues.

At the unprecedented summit between the North and the US in Singapore last week, US President Donald Trump showed Pyongyang's Kim Jong Un a video showing the North transformed by economic growth.

"There is no impact on Pacific exercises outside of the Korean Peninsula", U.S. Defense Department spokeswoman Dana White said in a statement.

"Following close cooperation, South Korea and the US made a decision to suspend all planning activities for the UFG, the defensive exercise slated for August", Seoul's Defence Ministry said. A Pentagon spokesman said the United States had refrained from any decision on two sets of war games played every winter and early spring, Key Resolve and Foal Eagle.

South Korea's top diplomat also said the sanctions on the North "will remain in place" until concerned parties can ensure that complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula has been fulfilled. It has long proposed a "dual suspension", whereby North Korea stops weapons tests and the United States and South Korea stop military drills, to encourage talks.

The same goes for the South's dovish President Moon Jae-in, who supports engagement with North Korea and held his own summit with Kim in April.

South Korea and the United States are expected to announce the suspension of "large-scale" military drills this week, with the provision that they would restart if North Korea failed to keep its promise to denuclearize, news agency Yonhap said on Sunday.

Manafort turned around briefly to wave to his wife before heading out a door at the back of the crowded courtroom, witnesses said. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson said that there was no way to restrain Manafort from contacting people if he remained on bail.

The Pentagon said Operation Ulchi Freedom Guardian would not take place, while Washington and Pyongyang continue to discuss denuclearization following Trump's historic meeting with Kim in Singapore last Tuesday. It could also boost their medal chances."North Korea has strong female paddlers", Kim said.

South Korea's Ministry of National Defense said no decisions had been made regarding other joint exercises between the two countries after the Ulchi Freedom Guardian, according to the Korea Herald.
