Zero Waste Scotland released these figures on World Environment Day, (Tuesday 5 June), a global day focussed on beating plastic pollution.

"The Government of Canada will continue to drive progress on the environmental challenges we face as a global community, and protect the clean air and water we share".

With the growing issue on plastic waste menace, eminent worldwide sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has created a sand turtle with installation of plastic bottles at Puri beach with a message "Beat Plastic Pollution".

He added: "We should avoid unnecessary use of some plastic items, like straws, while we can replace them with other items which can be used a couple of times".

In an edit-piece published in English daily Hindustan Times, India's Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan said that today plastic was littering the shorelines and clogging some beaches totally.

However, Greenpeace applauded companies which were beginning to eliminate single-use plastics from their shelves and checkouts. On the World Environment Day, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said "Reject single-use plastic". Plastic in oceans is likely to outweigh fishes by 2050.

Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar urged people to vow not to use low-grade plastic.

After chairing a meeting of environmental experts and top government officials on the topic, President Nicos Anastasiades said in a statement that he gave instructions for Cyprus to play a bigger role in a part of the world that's particularly susceptible to climate change.

He said India was his choice to host this year's "World Environment Day" due to a variety of reasons, including its vast population and fast economic growth.

While acknowledging that combating plastic waste is different for every country, the United Nations report suggested 10 universal steps that policymakers can follow, including use of more eco-friendly alternatives to plastics and the promotion of reusable products.

"Fifteen thousand tonnes of plastic waste is generated every day, 9,000 tonnes is collected and recycled, but 6,000 tonnes of plastic waste is not collected and remain littered", Javadekar said.

The above initiative by India is the most ambitious one, which is meant to tackle plastic pollution, compared to the actions announced by 60 world counties.
