US Democrats lining up strong contenders for House

Levin starts out as the favorite because the Democratic candidates scored more votes more than Republicans combined in the district that Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

US President Donald Trump cast the night as a win for Republicans. Mr. Trump said on Twitter Wednesday morning. "We'll have a good debate about which way this state should go".

Californian voters took to the polls on Tuesday, June 5 for one of the most closely watched primaries leading up to the 2018 midterm elections. Party Republicans strongly support the tax law that Mr. Trump signed previous year, though it is more of a drag than a lift among voters overall, the new Journal/NBC News poll shows.

This will continue the long pattern of Southern California politicians hitting their career ceiling when they get into leadership within the state Legislature. "Remember, Dems are High Tax, High Crime, easy to beat!"

The California GOP is relieved to have a candidate at the top of the ticket in the governor's race this fall after Tuesday's primaries. Female Republican governors in Alabama and Iowa will vie for their first full terms after succeeding men who resigned.

Republican candidate Patrick Little came to national prominence after he placed second, behind Democratic incumbent Dianne Feinstein, in an April poll.

The Newman recall campaign is the first in California since a failed effort against a Republican state senator in 2008 and the first on the state level anywhere in the nation since 2013, Joshua Spivak, author of the Recall Elections Blog, said in an email.

However, its handful of competitive races have made it hotly contested territory in the fight over control of the US House of Representatives, drawing big money and the spotlight on the biggest primary night of the midterms.

Democratic leaders fretted about this possibility more and more as primary day drew nearer, envisioning a scenario in which their abundant candidate pool cannibalized itself to Republicans' advantage.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well. "In three high-profile House races, there are so many candidates from the two major parties eating into one another's support that the election results may end up owing more to chance than any discernible will of the people". Another 24 Democrats have run for state senate seats, the most in at least a decade, according to data by the nonpartisan political site Ballotpedia.
