The study, billed as the most comprehensive review of government action to curb single-use plastics, said up to 5 trillion plastic bags were used worldwide each year.

As per this year's theme - beat plastic pollution - the plastic wrapping of the magazine in India, UK and the U.S. editions has been eliminated from June onwards. Every World Environment Day has a different global host country, where the official celebrations take place. Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photodegrade i.e. breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating soil and waterways and entering the food web when animals accidentally ingest them.
