One-stop shop for youth services offers Mental Health Week tips

It's received £880,000 of funding from NHS England and will now expand to deliver care and support in Rotherham and Doncaster where there is currently limited specialist mental health support for new mums.

Our government recognizes that supporting people's mental health is just as important as supporting their physical health, at every stage of life. Like teachers, staff in nurseries and other early years settings need mental health training so they can work with parents to promote young children's social and emotional development.

Launched earlier this week, "BeKind2TheMind", is a mental health initiative created to raise awareness of mental illness as well as "educate our community about the need for increased public investment in mental health resources and, most importantly, encourage people to be part of the solution", according to its website.

A report by the Education and Health and Social Care select committees said that the strategy could leave the most disadvantaged children without care. Half of school leaders appear to have cut back on their mental health support services. We are developing a comprehensive mental-health and addictions strategy across government, focused on early intervention and prevention, and treatment and recovery.

The website includes a form letter to send to representatives, and asks that people share their own personal stories on mental health in order to help spur action.

Neil Leitch, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, said, 'It's hard to see how government could contemplate any children's mental health policy that doesn't begin with the role of early years professionals in promoting mental well-being in young children.

Since the facility opened, many youth have been dropping in to seek services in everything from employment to a whole range of health-care services, said Dale Handley, manager for VCH's North Shore Youth Mental Health and Substance Use program that operates at Foundry and other facilities.

The report says the paper fails to mention apprentices at all in its 54 pages, and also notes that "neither minister referred to colleges or further education at all" when they were questioned by the committees.

"As a starting point, we want to see councils and schools given the funding to offer independent mental health counselling so pupils have access to support as and when they need it", he said.

"It is unacceptable that children are waiting on average almost two months for an initial assessment by Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS)".

Matthew Reed, chief executive of The Children's Society, said, 'Thousands of young people in desperate need of support with their mental health are being failed. Adverse childhood experiences such as poor attachment or through parental alcohol and drug abuse or domestic violence can have a bad bearing on future well-being and a preventative approach in the early years must be a core part of the Government's strategy.

A government spokesperson completed rejected the suggestion that the plans lack ambition, arguing that they will transform mental health services for children and young people with the first ever waiting time standards for those with the most serious problems.

Barbara Keeley MP, Labour's shadow minister for mental health, said, 'This report deals a hammer blow to the credibility of the Tory Government in ensuring children and young people with mental ill health get the help and support they need and deserve.
